So many things I discovered during my 2 months in China. Some obscure stuff I wouldn’t even touch. Like turtle, dog,shark, monkey brain, chicken feet, …you get it.
Most of the time there is no English translation, so I was using the translator a lot. Mandarin is not word by word translatable so sometimes it was very funny to see what the translator gave me in return. The variety of food is huge, every region of the country has its own kitchen and style. Mainly meat and super often it’s fried on top. Street food ist super cheap, saté sticks with pork, squid, beef or mutton, dumplings and buns with all kind of fillings, tofu, eggs, pancakes, so many new things to try, most of what I tried tasted super delicious, and spicy.
In the last two weeks of my trip I really went all in with all kinds of Chinese food, not eating vegetarian anymore but wanting to be open and discover the country from another angle. And boy I did that!
My top five:
- Baozhi
Riceflour buns with a filling, could be meat ragout, mushrooms oder sweet red bean paste - Bian Bian
A spicy noodle dish with chilly oil, super savory sauce - Hot Pot
The concept is simple, similar to fondue just the ingredients differ. First choose your type of boiling sause. Could be tomato, curry, or something spicy. Then order what ever you like, veggies, mushrooms, meet all comes in mouth friendly bits. With your chopsticks you hold the food in the boiling sauce for a minute and then use your dip to fully enjoy. - Dumplings, Dim Sum
Almost every nation has a dish where the inner filling is wrapped in dough or noodle. Din sums and all other kind of dumplings go the same way. Fried or steamed - Deserts in general
Mochi or riceballs with sesame seed in all different kind of forms. Rice cakes, red bean soup with rice balls there are hardly any desserts I didn’t like.
That listing means that of course I ate crazy sophisticated things and tried a lot super delicious food those would be the go to dishes which I want to find or even try to prepare my own at home.
