Shanghai Tower – getting high

The Shanghai tower is at the time of writing the second tallest building in the world. With its 632m only the Burj Kalifa in Dubai is taller. The towers observation deck is at 552m on the 119th floor. Want more info just head over to the tower info.

On a clear and sunny day, no smog, great visibility I went up to the 360 degree panoramic observatory, the city to my feet, but not that fast, it’s a small mission to get there, and always remember, bring time!

First I needed to register with my passport before buying the ticket. Then get in queue as usual on touristy stuff here in China. Multiple waiting points like in airports until I could finally get to the elevator. With a soaring 18 meter per second the lift climbed up in no time!

The view is stunning from above! All those big ass skyscrapers around seem so tiny! Mind blowing, no other words!
I took my time to view all different parts of the city and then another wait for the next highlight. Every big tower has a damper. A huge weight, and we’re talking 100 tons here, is hung on the top and stabilises the whole building. Wind and earthquakes are the common threats for tall buildings and the damper takes care of that.

In Shanghai tower the damper is also an art installation so every 30 min a light show paired with a bit of history lesson is happening in the 126th floor above the clouds. I didn’t expect such a show and was amazed. It was worth the extra wait.

All in all I spent around 2,5 hours in the tower. Half of the time was waiting time.
Welcome to the land of the masses.
