Back through Austria – slowing down at Zenzsee

The last part of the trip was already the way back, taking us through Austria. Instead of rushing home, we made a two-day stop at Zenzsee, camping right next to the water with a calm mountain backdrop that instantly shifted the pace again. The campsite was simple and quiet, exactly what we needed after the coastal buzz. Waking up with the lake right in front of the tent, light mist over the water and the mountains framing everything felt grounding in the best possible way. Thunderstorms in the evening, Sun throughout the day, we took it all in.

We spent our days fishing by the shore, taking small hikes in the surrounding area and just being outside without a plan. Nothing spectacular, nothing forced, just moving, sitting, watching, and letting time pass naturally.

What really stayed with us were the people. Friendly locals, open conversations, small exchanges that made the place feel welcoming rather than touristic. The kind of encounters that don’t last long but leave a good trace.

Zenzsee was the perfect ending. Quiet, clear, and unpretentious.
A soft landing before returning to everyday life, carrying the calm of the mountains and the peace of Slovenia back home with us.

This was not a distance-driven journey. It was a pause-heavy, location-focused trip.

Estimated total distance: ≈ 2,200 km
Driving days: 8 days
Average per driving day: ≈ 245–275 km

The kilometers stayed reasonable because movement was optional.
Several days existed purely for staying put, walking, swimming, eating, looking.
Mondsee set the tone early: calm, ordered, reflective.
Slovenia followed with quiet confidence—compact landscapes, short distances, high reward.
Styria closed the loop gently, the Zenzsee acting more as a full stop than a highlight.

No pressure to “get somewhere.”
No need to justify stillness.
