Cairo – first steps in Mama Africa

Egypt was my first time in Africa, and it started in Cairo. Loud, dense, overwhelming and impossible to ignore. I reunited with Elise in the middle of this chaos, and from that moment on the city pulled us straight in.

We visited the Egyptian National Museum, moving through halls filled with objects that shouldn’t still exist and yet do. Layer after layer of history, compressed into one place, demanding attention whether you’re ready for it or not.

We wandered through old town and the markets. Narrow streets, shouting vendors, smells of spices, dust, fuel, food, we at the national dish Koshari – everything at once. There’s no gentle introduction. Cairo hits you full force, and you either resist or surrender. We chose the second.

Evenings took us along the Nile, watching the water carry a strange calm through the middle of all that noise. The contrast was striking, stillness cutting straight through the chaos.

Cairo doesn’t let you stay detached. The fumes, the crowds, the intensity soak in, whether you want them to or not. It was exhausting, fascinating, and raw, it felt a bit like Asia and is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

Next stop the Red Sea 😉
